My Journey

A daily account of walking the Shikoku 88.

I had the deepest sleep last night. On most nights I’d wake up half way through, experience that whole “state of confusion” in regards to sleeping in an unfamiliar place, and then have trouble going back to sleep. But not last night. The hut was actually quite warm, thanks to my three coffee-can candle holders. Not only did they provide ample light, but the cans provided enough heat to truly make the hut cozy and comfy. Just before I fell asleep I could hear howling, and it wasn’t too far off. I assumed it was a raccoon dog - the tanuki - similar to the one I had seen near Temple 12, but I wasn’t sure. There was definitely more than one, however I was thankful that the hut had a door and windows - and all were closed and secure.

Cozy on the inside, nightmares on the outside.
