My Journey

A daily account of walking the Shikoku 88.

With Day 9 being a day to rest, bum around, and do some planning, I was hoping for a sleep in. Unfortunately my body clock had other ideas, and so I was up at five o'clock with way too much energy to burn. In saying that, however, I'm glad I got up when I did.  Out the door well before sunrise, I went to the 7-Eleven next door for my morning coffee, then took my place on the deck back at Pavilion Surf to watch my first proper sunrise over the East Coast of Japan.

Land Of The Rising Sun

It was nice to be able to sit down, relax, and not have to be anywhere. As I sat on the deck with my feet up on the railing, I watched the sun slowly rise, with the sky turn from dark blue into a warm gold. It was very therapeutic just sitting there, sipping my coffee, and watching the day take form. It was the perfect opportunity to get the drone up too, and get some nice aerial shots.

Good morning, paradise.

This was really yummy

After a few hours it was time to get some breakfast. Thanks to Yota's hand-drawn map, I decided to have a cheap tasty breakfast at Cafe Hikousen. For ¥540, I had juice and coffee (with free refill), a warm vegetable salad, quiche, toast with jam, and fried eggs. What a bargain! Hikousen was set up like an old-fashioned diner, and had a very warm local feeling too it. I got chatting with the waitress, and she told me how her daughter had been living and studying in Melbourne, not too far from home.

After breakfast I went on a walk around Shishikui to do a bit of exploring. Route 55 made it look busy due to the traffic, but once in the centre of town, it was resembled a sleepy ghost town. Apart from a few of the elderly sitting outside their little shops, there was really no one around. If going off Yota's map was anything to go by, It had become quite clear that Shishikui was purely a small surfing town with a handful of bars and restaurants, and that's it. There's no denying it though - Shishikui was still a very beautiful place to recharge at.

Sleepy Shishikui

After a konbini lunch, I sat on the shaded deck with my guide book, notebook, and free lodging list, and planned the next week's worth of walking and accommodation. Yota and his team of workers were great - they were able to call ahead and book tomorrow night's (Thursday) accommodation for me. But it took a few tries to find somewhere that wasn't booked out. The big problem hit me when trying to book Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It seemed that everywhere was booked out. I could not find any available motels, ryokans, or business hotels. So instead of planning a week of lodgings, I planned a week of walking with two days of lodging. I came to the conclusion that it's impossible to plan that far ahead; I'd sleep outside if I needed too, like I had planned to do before I arrived to Japan. I went through the free lodging list and marked the best spots in my guide book.

Route 55, a love / hate relationship

I told myself that I was going to swim today, but it never happened; I even bought a pair of board shorts from Yota for this exact reason the day before. Instead I sat on that deck for HOURS, planning, writing, and reading. Before I knew it, it was already dusk. The seafood pasta from last night was delicious, and I thought I'd go back to Restaurant Bahati for seconds tonight, however not one restaurant was open! Too late to go to the supermarket, I had a seafood pasta from the 7-Eleven, costing ¥460, and fried chicken. Healthy? Nope. I justified it by the fact I was walking with a pack nearly every single day, and didn't care.
It was a very hot and humid night tonight, too uncomfortable to eat a hot dinner on the deck. Sitting in my room on my bed, I kicked back under the refreshing air-conditioner and ate dinner whilst watching a movie on my phone. I had roughly forty kilometres to walk tomorrow, so I had to have an early night. I didn't need convincing, as I fell asleep watching my movie...
